Richard Gaffin Turns EightyJuly 07, 2016

Today, July 7, 2016, marks the 80th birthday of Dr. Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., emeritus professor of biblical and systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. Since joining our faculty in 1966, Dr. Gaffin has established himself as a scholar of nearly unparalleled theological excellence and insight. The impact of his teaching and writing extends throughout the world.
As I reflect on Dr. Gaffin’s ministry, it’s hard for me to overstate the influence he has had on my own theological development. Dr. Gaffin’s friends and colleagues have expressed a similar appreciation:
Dick Gaffin was a grad student at Westminster when I began my B. D. program in 1961. All my classmates looked up to him as a godly friend and as one likely to accomplish great things. God rewarded that expectation. Dick is the one we all think about today when we reflect on the contemporary representatives of the Vos tradition in exegesis and theology. His work will be read and re-read for many years. Happy 80th to a brilliant servant of Christ.
—John M. Frame, Professor of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, RTS Orlando
What a gift Dr. Richard Gaffin has been to Christ’s church—and now for 80 years. Thanks be to God for his faithful witness in life and in theology. We are all in his debt, and we celebrate this important milestone with him in gratitude.
—Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Happy Birthday to Dr. Gaffin! I have benefited from his theological and exegetical work. Grateful for his emphasis on union with Christ.
—Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor at University Reformed Church
A Westminster prof, Richard Gaffin,
Exhibits the best of good staffin’:
Although he is eighty
His thoughts are still weighty
And sprinkled with good-humored laughin’.
—Don Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
I am delighted to join other well-wishers on this remarkable occasion. It is a milestone to celebrate with so many others because we have benefited richly from a good number of those 80 years that God has given you to write, preach and teach. I’m thankful to be among that number. Standing on the shoulders of giants, you have contributed your own syntheses of biblical and systematic theology. Your example of integrating these disciplines as well as your gracious manner have been important for many of us. So happy birthday—and many more!
—Mike Horton, Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California
Happy belated birthday to Richard “Goose” Gaffin, who helped me understand the resurrection eschatology of union with Christ, who was a great conversation partner (with Jean) at our book club during seminary, and who always performed admirably on the mound during faculty/student softball games – great memories for me of a true father in the faith who has always treated me more like a brother.
—Philip Ryken, President of Wheaton College
