Who Do You Say That I Am?

“Who do you say that I am?”

The entirety of Church history can be reduced, in at least one sense, to the Christ question. This doesn’t mean that all of church history is the history of Christology in the narrow sense, yet it is possible to say that from the very beginning the Church has been wrestling with the identity of Christ precisely in the terms of Jesus’ question. This question is ultimately creedal, confessional, and personal. But before we can even begin to address the question, we must first understand how the Scriptures themselves present Christ—not as one in need of historical interpretation, but as the One through whom all history finds its meaning.
